Beau

The store’s mascot is none other than Sturgill’s trusty “hound”, Beau. He acts as the greeter when he hears the doorbell, guard dog against children or other dogs and, last but not least, the vacuum.

He is a five-year-old whippet whom Sturgill has had since he was a puppy. Often, he sleeps through shifts in his bed beneath a table. Other times, store manager Cindy Mabry keeps him busy by feeding him half of each of her meals – needless to say he no longer has a taste for dog food.

Many of the store’s regulars are familiar with Beau and his love of the soft mints by the register. So, next time you’re in, don’t be surprised if he wants a piece of your mint!

Philip Sturgill

Philip Sturgill is the owner of P.R. Sturgill Fine Jewelry, a Radford, Virginia based store offering a wide selection of new, antique and estate jewelry. Over more than 30 years, Sturgill grew his business into being one of the most successful and reputable jewelry stores in southwest Virginia.

Sturgill has continuously made it his mission to provide the best quality jewelry, customer service and overall experience possible. As a GIA certified Jeweler, Sturgill has nearly 50 years of knowledge and experience about jewelry, gemology and the jewelry business.

“I love the store and the sense of community it creates. Being able to meet so many people always keeps it interesting,” says Sturgill. “I’ve worked at the same place almost every day for over 30 years and there has never been a day where I wake up and I’m not excited to come to work.”

He prides himself on excellent service for each customer, now growing to soon occupy two locations with a new storefront in Wytheville, Virginia in addition to the original Radford location. The store offers the largest selection of antique and estate jewelry in the area, as well as high quality custom pieces and repairs with the help of GIA certified employees, with all work completed in-house and by hand.

Originally, the store was established in 1961 and Curtis “CC” Luffman grew the business into a reputable name throughout the New River Valley. Sturgill worked for Luffman starting in high school, eventually buying the business and making it his namesake in 1989.

Sturgill is from Norton, Virginia and has spent the majority of his life devoted to his business, and has become a staple figure in the tight-knit Radford and Wytheville communities.

P.R. Sturgill Fine Jewelry opening in Wytheville, VA

Radford, VA, April 27, 2020 – P.R. Sturgill Fine Jewelry announced the opening of a second store in October 2020. The Radford-based jeweler is expanding to open their second location in Wytheville this fall.

The new store will be the only jewelry store in Wytheville, filling a gap in the rapidly growing downtown area of the city. Alike the original Radford location, they will offer a wide variety of new and estate jewelry, as well as appraisals, repairs and buying unwanted and scrap gold.

“We’re extremely excited and blessed to have the opportunity to expand the business, especially to an area which doesn’t have a go-to jeweler,” says owner Philip Sturgill. “The new store will be managed by my long-time employee Jeremy Jones, and we’re all excited to become a part of and meet the whole community.”

Occupying a historic building on Main Street Wytheville, Sturgill will have a soft opening of the store for local newspapers and business- owners on Friday, Sept. 25. The owner and his employees are using it as a chance to get acquainted with some of the community members and create excitement for the grand opening just weeks after.

Sturgill has owned and operated the store since 1989, after working for the previous owner Curtis Luffman since high school. Being one of the longest-standing businesses in Radford, the store has become a staple in the small-town community – with many lifelong customers having first been brought into the store by their parents when they were children.

About P.R. Sturgill Fine Jewelry

Since 1961 “the jewelry store on the corner” has been providing the people of Radford, Va and beyond with great service and quality pieces of fine and estate jewelry.  Originally started by jeweler Curtis “CC” Luffman, Luffman’s Jewelers quickly became a reputable name in the watchmaking and jewelry repair business. In the early 70’s Luffman hired local high-school-student Philip Sturgill and, over the years, taught him the skills to become one of the New River Valley’s best and most sought-after jewelers.  Sturgill went on to purchase the business from Luffman in 1989 and change the name to P.R. Sturgill Fine Jewelry.

Today, just as in 1961, P.R. Sturgill Fine Jewelry performs all jewelry repairs in-house.  This includes ring-sizing, gemstone setting, custom engraving, and all other jewelry repairs.  The work performed is quality work by certified jewelers who have a passion for what they do.  We’re proud of what we do here.
